Nina Monteiro, our Principal Teacher, was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
At the age of six, she was introduced to ballet at the Grupo Cultural de Dança – Ilha, and fell in love. Whilst ballet was her passion, she also took lessons in Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop.
“To me, ballet was my second home, my home from home” Miss Nina reminisces about those early days “I felt so comfortable there – it gave me the confidence to believe that if I worked hard, I could realise my dream to dance ballet in Europe. The studio was my personal playground and gave me the security to immerse myself completely in my roles and become the characters”
During her ten years at the GCDI, Miss Nina was chosen to perform in every show and frequently represented them at national and international festivals and competitions with huge successes in both technical and artistic performance.
Miss Nina’s professional dance career began in Curitiba, Brazil, in 2007 at the Balé Teatro Guaíra, where she performed various classical and contemporary pieces such as The Nutcracker and Treze Gestos de um Corpo by Olga Roriz.
And then, her second love was born. In 2006, at the tender age of 20, the School Director Patricia Marques, invited Miss Nina to work as her rehearsal assistant and ballet teacher. It was as if ballet had defined her, but teaching had taught her to make a difference.
In 2009 Nina moved to Germany to work with Theater Nordhausen Ballett where she was able to co-create many of the leading roles she was given.
She then moved to Surrey in 2011 which now feels like home. She has been fortunate to work as ballet tutor at a number of
acclaimed various dance schools and studios. She teaches pupils of all ages, from 3 years to 73 years, male and female, fledgling to exceptional.
During lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, Nina Monteiro choreographed the outdoor show "The Secret Garden" for the New Creations Collective company which has toured around England.
Nina Monteiro is member of the ISTD and holds a DDI qualification in Cecchetti Classical Ballet.
